Beauty Empties | March 2013

March was a bit of a dud month in terms of the products I finished for review. I don't particularly like writing negative reviews, but I do like reading them as they've saved me from wasting a lot of money over the years.  Of course everyone's skin chemistry is different, but I'll just go through my honest opinion of each for you.

Joico K-Pak Moisture Intense Hydrator Treatment* - no repurchase

Let's get the good news out of the way first.  It smells nice.  Not fabulous, but very sweet and tropical. I've seen this hair treatment raved about all over the interwebs and the mind boggles as to why.  I've seen people with much drier hair than mine hail it as a saviour for their locks but if anything, it worsened the condition of my hair. It performed no better than your standard couple of quid conditioner, definitely not worth the approx. £16 price tag.  My blogger friend Angel also detested it, so I got back up on this!  My advice is save your money for Kerastase.

Garnier Pure Active Blackhead Clearing Scrub - no repurchase

This face scrub bored me to tears.  It was such a slog to get through.  I've got my fair share of blackheads and it did nothing to sort them out.  The blue 'scrubby' particles are just too large to be of any consequence.  Other than that it was very creamy and not foamy enough to even perform as a decent cleanser. Pass.

Natura Bisse The Cure Pure Serum* - maybe repurchase

Natura Bisse is a Spanish skincare line and let me tell you upfront that I've just googled it and found it on sale for over £230.  I received this small sample in an event gift bag and didn't touch it for ages, however when I did, it was used religiously every morning given its perfect consistency and texture for under make up.  I never realised it was some sort of wonder serum which scores 4.7/5 on Makeup Alley. It contains loads of fancy skincare Science, but I think at the time my skin was thankfully too young for me to notice any major changes.

Clinique Sheer City Block SPF 25 - no repurchase

This has been a perennial favourite since my early 20s.  I still have one more back tube to power through and then I'm done with this stuff, I just feel I've outgrown it.  I'm not entirely convinced by its SPF 25 claim, although it is pretty greasy.  A few years ago it was the only tinted moisturiser pale enough for me, but cosmetics companies have woken up to the fact that daywalkers like make up too, so there's a lot more on colour range on the market to choose from now.  My current favourite is No7 Triple Protection Tinted Moisturiser with SPF 15, not very greasy but fabulous buildable coverage and a great shade for ginger skin.

Clinique Pore Minimizer Refining Serum - no repurchase

This was another Clinique staple until recently, and like the City Block I have another tube to get through even though I'm over it.  Stockpiling and buying back ups is a beauty blogger ritual, but I'd advise against it because there are always so many new fabulous products on the market there's just no point.  There will always be a hotter, younger product to take your fancy! I would hardly call this stuff 'serum' because once it sinks into skin and dries, it almost has a chalky texture.  I find it hard to find an appropriate time to use it on its own because my skin has become less oily than it used to be and so I definitely need some sort of moisture over the top.  However, if you struggle with super oily skin, this may work as a good make up primer for you as it's pretty absorptive.

GHD Thermal Protector - no repurchase

I received this with my GHDs many moons ago and it was a slog to get through because I didn't really feel it did much to protect my hair, and I am quite naughty in being lazy with heat protectors.  The best thing about it is the Gucci Rush scent.

Nivea Visage Aqua Sensation Anti Shadow Eye Cream - no repurchase

Forever Amber wrote about it a few years ago raving about it's under-eye-shadow busting properties.  It 's a  great eye cream for the budget price, and if you're just starting out with skincare I'd highly recommend it.  However my eyes need anti-aging and luckily my dark circles aren't too bad.  For now.

Bio-Oil - maybe repurchase

When I was on the pill a few years ago, its diuretic properties gave me super dry legs so in a bid to relieve the itchy hell I tried out Bio-Oil.  It really did the job of reviving my poor parched skin, but it just smells so dang nasty, like some sort of medicated treatment rather than something nice and luxurious to pamper yourself with.  Fair enough that it's raison d'etre is to sort out scars and other skin blemishes, but I really think the brand, and if possible, the scent could do with some serious sexing up.  An equally nice treatment for super dry skin in Waitrose's Baby Bottom Butter.  It's mega cheap, so hydrating and smells far better than Bio-Oil.

What's your eye cream of choice? Let me know in the comments!

Review | Garnier 5 Second Perfect Blur Primer

Garnier 5 Second Perfect Blur Primer*
Get it at Boots for £12.99

I finally upgraded to a decent camera last week and this is my first post with the fruits of its labour.  I'm totally clueless with it and have just been keeping it on auto, so hang in there until I get time to read the manual or watch a few YouTube tutes.  All I can say is that I'm loving it for low light conditions.  My trusty old Panasonic Lumix TZ7 is still fabulous for daytime macro shots, but struggles at elegantly lit events.

Anyway, I'm here to wax lyrical about my love for this new primer kid on the block.  At the blogger launch event last week at the Waldorf Astoria I walked in expecting it to be some sort of Nanoblur knock off.  I haven't tried Nanoblur and despite giving it to my mum for Christmas she hasn't broken into the tube yet.  Call me crazy but I think she was insulted by the gift! Nanoblur is apparently water based while Perfect Blur is Silicone based, and with my limited scientific knowledge I'm assuming that this means it's smoother.  Comparing it to L'Oreal Studio Secrets Smoothing Resurfacing Primer, Benefit Porefessional and Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector, I prefer Garnier Perfect Blur to all of them.

It's super smooth and has a really mousse-whipped consistency.  I first tried it OVER make up (liquid and powder foundation) and was astounded when it actually worked to smooth things out, mattify and generally freshen up my look.  This was one of Nanoblur's claims that I was very skeptical about, but Perfect Blur delivers on this.  Under make up it's even better, I love how velvety it makes my skin feel.  We were given small tubs of the stuff and I've reached for it every day before applying make up.  What I really love it for is lazy days when all I want to do is moisturise, Perfect Blur and cover up with powder.  It gives a super smooth and flawless finish to my skin without having to touch my liquid foundation.

While it initially mattifies my skin, it doesn't keep it matte for very long.  Silicone-based products always leave me a bit shiny after an hour or so.  The best thing about it for me is it lessens the appearance of pores and fine lines on my forehead.

The lovely Suzy Rycroft did my make up (final photo) - she's worked with Alex Box in the past, you can check out here website here (suzyrycroft.com), she's majorly talented.

Beauty Empties | December 2012

L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black - definite repurchase

This is a phenomenal drugstore/bargain mascara, and it's finally come to UK shores.  The wand reminds me of Lancome Hypnose and the formula is almost as dark and sooty as Make Up Forever Smoky Lash, without the price tags of either of these.  It's a fantastic all-round mascara which I use for both day and night - thickening, lengthening and holds a curl pretty well.  Next time you're in Boots or Superdrug, you have to give this one a go.

Original Source Vanilla and Raspberry Shower - maybe repurchase

I forgot how delicious this smells until the empty bottle out to review and now it's been upgraded from a 'no repurchase' to a definite 'maybe'.  It's a real treat to use but I found I got through it very quickly, but you can always get these on offer so it's not too sore on the purse.  It's very moisturising and I prefer it to their more zingy shower gel offerings.

Yes to Blueberries Age Refresh Anti-Wrinkle Intensive Repair Serum* - maybe repurchase

This is a really nice everyday serum.  I have a fuller review of this and the accompanying night cream coming up, but I got through this serum first as I found myself reaching for it every single morning.  It sinks in quickly and provided a great base for make up if I didn't feel like waiting for a cream to sink in.  Naughty I know as it doesn't have SPF in it, but in a rush it did the trick.  The blueberry smell is fresh and comforting.  I'm seriously thinking about picking this up again.

Garnier Body Summerbody Moisturising Lotion - Light Sunkissed Look - definite repurchase

As much I loved this self-tanner, it took me an age to get through it.  That had more to do with the fact that I'm very lazy with applying it and rock the Twilight look more than I should.  I've tried countless gradual tanners and this is by far the best budget option.  It has a fresh fruity smell with only minimal biscuity whiffyness compared to all your Dove, Nivea, Johnson's, etc offerings.  It sinks in extremely quickly, does a good job at moisturising, doesn't streak and gives a really natural tanned glow, even to my ginger skin which can end up looking orange.  If you are a tanaholic and haven't tried this one yet, you must.

YSL Touche Eclat - maybe repurchase

I don't even want to admit to you how long I've had this radiance wand, but between you and me, it began 'not smelling right'.  That has more to do with me 'saving' it for special occasions rather than the longevity of the whopping 2.5mls of radiant liquid.  Since it joined my collection there have been so many other dupes coming onto the market - Sleek MakeUP, Aldi, L'Oreal, Collection 2000 to name a few really budget versions.  These give me pretty much the same effect as Touche Eclat.  I can only see myself repurchasing this to have a pretty gold wand in my handbag make up bag for touch ups, which has more to do with style than substance.

Yes to Cucumbers Daily Gentle Facial Cleanser* - maybe repurchase

This was one of the nicest facial washes I used last here.  For a full review click here.  It smells divine - not as fresh as you would expect from a cucumber product but quite perfumed.  This may be an issue for those with sensitive skin.  Although it lathers up very well, it left my skin cleansed and soft, not tight.  A really nice product which I'd definitely repurchase, particularly if it was easier to come by on the high street.

The Body Shop Banana Shampoo - definite repurchase

This is an old classic which I think was revived by The Body Shop, but don't quote me on that.  Anyway, I'm glad it's back.  I would compare it to Aussie Moisture Miracle Shampoo, both in scent, lathering and hair cleansing properties.  I use Aussie so much I was getting a little bored and I think it's good to switch up your shampoo every so often - my hair is very oily and gets used to shampoos so quickly.  The Body Shop Banana Shampoo smells lovely, evokes memories and does a good job of cleaning hair without stripping it, and leaving it shiny and easy to comb through.

I will be doing this 'Empties' series on a monthly basis.  It seemed like whole months passed in 2012 without me finishing so much as one product.  I'm not very loyal to products and flit between different skincare, makeup, hair products daily, but in 2013 I am going to be much more focused getting through my stash and I'll let you know each month how I get on.  I did pretty well in December, with no 'no repurchases' come across, but I'm sure there'll be some in the future.

Have you tried any of my December Empties? What would you repurchase/definitely not repurchase?

Review | My Best Body Skincare Find of 2012: Garnier Body Ultimate Beauty Oil Skin Perfector

Garnier Body Ultimate Beauty Oil Skin Perfector - £7.99
Where to buy? Boots in store or online or Superdrug

This impulse purchase has turned out to be my favourite body care product this year.  I've tried a million and one body oils, lotions, mists and sprays down the years and while they are nourishing, they are not practical.  I can't stand getting oil all over my pajamas, bedsheets, clothes - have you ever tried wriggling into skinny jeans with damp legs? Yeah...

This Garnier body oil is a revelation - the texture is gorgeous, it's supremely nourishing and skin softening and the scent is heavenly.  It's smells far nicer than more upmarket rivals and reminds me of a softer version of Juicy Couture Couture perfume, I tend to forgo perfume on days I use this as the fragrance is too divine to interfere with.  I struggle with super dry legs in the winter and have been using this body oil much more often than I used to with heavier versions.  It really is as weightless and non-transferable as it claims and contains a blend of Argan, Macadamia, Almond and Rose oil.

Garnier is often on special offer at Boots so if you see it for £5.99 (what I got it for a couple of months ago) stock up!  I took these pictures only a few days after cracking into the bottle and you can see how much and I used (although a little goes a very long way) and the cap had already gone astray! The spray pump is great for going over your whole body, but if you apply it on a light carpeted surface like me, then you might just want to spray it into your hands and rub in to avoid oil staining.

I cannot praise this body oil enough and so award it Holy Grail status.  You need this in your life.

Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector Daily All-In-One B.B. Blemish Balm Cream

'Miracle Skin Perfector'...now guys, this is where it all goes wrong...who are they trying to kid? But if they *must* set themselves up for a fall then they must.  I bought this 'BB cream' many moons ago, used it once, thought 'holy hell that is orange...and greasy' and promptly forgot about it.  Early mornings and sweaty tubes have pushed me back to it as an alternative to moisturiser and I have softened towards it second time round now that the overblown claims have been forgotten.

While I'll admit most of my issues with this product come from the shade  - in what universe is tangerine 'Light'?! - I really can't see that it is any more than a souped up tinted moisturiser.  Certainly not a BB cream by the original Asian standards.  The coverage is what you'd expect from a tinted moisturiser, as is the longevity.  Not a great option for oily skin like mine which likes to be covered just a little bit more, but if you have relatively clear skin which is dry and you want a very natural look, then go for it.  I can't say I've noticed it making my skin any more radiant (claims the Vitamin C does the trick) but I don't suffer with dullness - go me!

If curiosity gets the better of you Boots is selling it for £9.99 and always seems to have some sort of Garnier products deal going on.  However if you're willing to spend a little more give Clinique's City Block Sheer SPF25 a whirl.  Great sun protection, much lighter pale skin friendly shade and not as greasy.

Have you tried this Garnier BB cream? You like?

Garnier Goodies: Youthful Radiance and Tinted Eye Roll-On

A few weeks ago I gave into the raves and went hunting for the Garnier Caffeine Anti-dark Circles 2 in 1 Tinted Eye Roll-on.  I should have known better but I never learn...drugstore 'fair skin tone' descriptions are not talking about your MAC NC 10 -15 types of fair tones, more like NC20-25.  Which in my opinion, is not fair!

Faring better is the Youthful Radiance Night cream, which has a bit of a gel consistency to it.  This I'm in love with as it's not to greasy and heavy on my oily skin and doesn't irritate my skin or around my eyes in the slightest despite containing caffeine and fruit acids.  It smells divine, a fresh fruit zing that I want to lick.

After the first roll I knew the tint was far to dark for my undereye, but I must say it is extremely soothing and refreshing to apply. Now that I'm getting on a bit in the morning my eyes feel and look like two pissholes in the snow (thanks Frank McCourt!) so it's really nice to smooth on. I prefer the feeling of the tinted one to the original un-tinted one, it just feels cooler for some reason. If you can be bothered store it in the fridge and it will be even cooler and this will help reduce puffiness and vasoconstrict the blood vessels to reduce the appearance of dark circles.

It goes on kind of light but then...

...it dries to this and it's Oompa Loompa time :(

I can get away with it if I cover the yellowness up with a lighter concealer, like Sleek's Luminaire in L01 or my MAC Studio Fix NC15.  But it just adds another step to my already fraught morning routine.

However, if you are NC/NW20-25 I highly recommend this as the coverage is pretty darn good considering the thin consistency.  If you have fine lines around your eyes you may also prefer this to a heavier concealer which would settle into them.

I got both these Garnier goodies for around £12 in a Boots deal, can't see online if it's still on, but it was one of those they regularly run. I probably wouldn't have bought the night cream if not for the offer, but am very glad I did.
